2009 Magazine Report – Geography trips 2009
|
To celebrate the end of SATS, Year 6 set off on a windy, grey morning to the tow path along the Thames at Putney. The severe weather warning was rather misguided as the early rain was quickly blown away. After half term, the sun shone as Years 5 & 6 arrived at school with their suitcases. Osmington Bay was our destination this year and it provided the usual range of challenges, from abseiling down towers, climbing walls, putting on duvet covers and learning the correct way around the canteen! Corfe Castle, Lulworth Cove, Chesil Beach, Abbotsbury Swannery - all bathed in sunshine - added to the fun and taught us a great deal. A worthwhile trip which will be remembered in different ways.
Year 9 set off to see the regeneration of London’s Docklands, having looked at the historic buildings of Greenwich. The sun shone again as we sailed down the Thames to the Barrier. Boats, tubes and the DLR all worked beautifully for this field trip. The Box Hill climb was completed successfully by most of Year 8, some in record time! Having learned about the geology of the North Downs and seen how grapes are turned into wine at Denbies Vineyard, we saw how Box Hill is able to handle large numbers of tourists.
Year 7 mastered the train, tube and bus journey to the Thames Barrier Centre in record time, so were able to use the impressive slide before starting the workshop explaining how the Barrier works. Everyone enjoyed the Flood Game, deciding what would be needed from your home to fill just one rucksack, as the Thames water threatened to flood your home. After heated discussion as to whether the pet cat or the insurance certificate should be taken, points were earned.
Year 10 spent a cold, damp day in Cobham collecting data and completing land use transects for their GCSE coursework. Later, two days were spent in Dorset examining coastal processes and coastal management. More Detail Needed Another busy year at Putney Park!
