2009 Magazine Report – Fashion Show

Parents’ Summer Party & Fashion Show

Thursday, 25th June 2009

It all started when I heard the infamous Gok Kwan say something about teenagers and fashion; that teenagers were being given negatives images to follow and that adults could help them more ... and that was it! I talked to my fellow FOPPS form rep and all was decided. At the end of the summer term, we were going to do a charity fundraiser for the school by getting the girls involved and it would be their idea of fashion. In other words, what they thought looked good on them.

After the initial discussion with Mrs Mann, it was all systems go. We were partnered up with the FOPPS form reps from Year 8, and all of a sudden the evening started to come into focus as a fun packed evening for the parents of the Upper School ... and our girls!

The evening began with a complimentary glass of champagne on arrival, where parents were ushered into the school gardens by Year 10 girls. There was quite a buzz as more and more parents began to arrive. Soft music was heard which had been set up by Rebecca & Georgia of Year 8, who were our resident DJs for the evening. There was much talk about what the girls might be wearing. Parents wandered in and out of the marquee which had been set up and decorated for the fashion show which was coming on later in the evening. It gave them an idea as to what was to come. The marquee had been decorated in girlie pink, white, purple and fuchsia with lots of rosette twirls. It looked amazing!

Behind the scenes during the afternoon, some girls had already been to Headmasters hair salon and returned with the most amazing – and in some cases zany - hairstyles. They looked wonderful! The girls who had requested to be models had the opportunity to chose their outfits from a selection offered to the school by Alley Cat, Tammy and Lulu & Red. The make-up artists, some of whom were Year 10 girls had had the chance to see the girls in a dress rehearsal and so get the vibe for how they wanted them made up.

While the parents were enjoying a delicious buffet supper, the girls were putting finishing touches to clothes, hair and make-up. Then the tempo of the music changed; the girls were ready to go!.

Parents were ushered into the marquee ... the fashion show was about to start. The music switched to Dizzy Rascal’s latest tune. Our resident DJs had swung into action and so had our model girls. They walked in, one after another, to tremendous cheers and applause. It was an onslaught of block colours and design. The girls had been advised by Lisa Butcher and it certainly showed. They were happy, confident and had more than a swagger in their stride. They struck poses, swung their hips and their hair. At the bottom of the runway, all you could hear was click, click, click. It was the paparazzi! It was just so much fun; for the girls, for their parents and for the whole audience.

It was wonderful to see the girls doing something different for themselves and being responsible for setting the pace of the show.
