In the Autumn Term we visited Fulham Palace to investigate evidence of Roman settlements in the local area. The girls were intrigued to see a Roman shoe that had been stuck in the mud near Putney Bridge for almost 1700 years. The girls also had the opportunity to handle real Roman artefacts, dress up in replica Roman costumes and do several household chores.

Year 4 also visited The Museum of London. The girls spent about an hour and a half in the Roman Gallery where they had the opportunity to follow a trail to find various Roman objects and do close observational drawings of various objects covering all aspects of Roman life in Londinium about two thousand years ago. The also met a ‘time-travelling’ freed slave who taught the girls about many aspects of life in Roman London, ranging from heated floors and walls to a spot of gladiator fighting.

The girls worked very hard and several of the Museum staff commented on the girl’s high interest level and excellent behaviour.

At school we made Roman wooden dollies and, continuing with the Roman theme, a date was set for a ‘Roman Day’ in February. The girls enthusiastically sewed their own costumes and on the day, the class room was arranged as a triclinium and the girls prepared a feast for themselves.

The spring term offered an opportunity for a visit to the British Museum. On 12th March, Years 3 and 4 shared a coach to get to this busy Museum. The girls in Year 4 visited the Anglo-Saxon gallery and worked with great interest throughout the visit. They settled down to work by the exhibits and again the girls were complimented on their interest and excellent behaviour.

In the Summer term, Years 3 and 4 visited Tate Britain where they attended a workshop on ‘Colour’. They had an opportunity to have a look at many famous paintings and sculptures.

For our class assemblies this year, Year 4 thought of various subjects ranging from Confucius to The Vikings. Our favourite, however, was the bible story of Jairus’ Daughter, which the girls performed with great enthusiasm – see photos below.
