Upper School - Geography

In our ever changing world, the aim of the Geography Department is to bring an understanding and sense of place to where we and others live.  Through the study of links and interactions, we attempt to bring together the physical and human worlds.  We hope to enthuse and engage pupils in independent study and in taking notice of what is happening in our world and why.  Our schemes of work offer a wide range of modules combining physical and human topics.  They develop skills of writing clearly and accurately about the world and its people, researching facts and figures using IT, using maps, photos, graphs and diagrams and collecting and interpreting data gained through fieldwork.

Geography is studied by all pupils in years 6,7 and 8.  As it is such a diverse subject, the intention is to give pupils at Key Stage 3 a broad curriculum covering both physical and human topics with a chance to look at processes and issues at the local, regional, national and global scale.

In Year 7, pupils study Ordnance Survey maps and the local area, The UK, Farming, Settlement and Rivers and Flooding.  Fieldwork is an important part of the curriculum and Year 7 pupils visit the Thames Barrier.  In Year 8 pupils study Ecosystems, Population Processes  and a study of the European Community with a focus on Italy.  Tourism is covered at the end of the year and pupils enjoy a one day trip to Box Hill.  In year 9 pupils are given the opportunity to study part of the GCSE syllabus where ‘The Restless Earth’ module gives them an insight into Geological Hazards and their impact across the globe.  ‘The Development Gap’ follows, providing an opportunity to study a country at a different stage of development such as Ghana.   At the end of the year Global Issues are studied including a look at the Fashion Industry along with Urban Development.  A field trip to Docklands is part of the Year 9 curriculum.

Geography is a popular Year 10 and 11 subject option and the course offers a combination of Human and Physical Geography together with practical geography and decision making skills.  Fieldwork has been offered to a variety of locations.  In hte past these have included Dorset and more local destinations such as Wimbledon Common.
