Upper School - Mathematics

The primary aim of the mathematics department is to provide a platform for pupils to:

  • engage in meaningful mathematical learning
  • consolidate the skills acquired
  • encourage fluency of performance
  • prepare them for their future workplace

In years 7 and 8, we enter the pupils for the UKMT (United Kingdom Mathematics Trust) Junior Maths Challenge on a voluntary basis.  This is to engage our pupils with pupils nationally in a mathematical competition.  Our pupils achieve very good results.  They find enjoyment in taking part gaining confidence as a result.

In year 9, we nominate the more enthusiastic mathematicians to participate in the Royal Institution of Great Britain mathematics masterclasses. The aim of these classes is to stimulate and encourage young people in the art and practice of mathematics and to develop a deeper sense of interest in the subject.

Our Key Stage 3 results compared to the national average have been excellent and although this is no longer a statutory test, we still take part in order to monitor each pupil’s development in the subject.

We do early GCSE entries at the end of Year10 if we believe it to be beneficial to the individual pupil.  Results have been most encouraging with some pupils achieving A’s and A*’s.  This enables a degree of AS level teaching in Year 11 to smooth their way into Advanced level mathematics in their subsequent schools.

We are proud of our value added scores for pupils of all abilities in this subject. Pupils gain an average of between 1 to 1.7 grades from their predicted grades which they obtain from their Year 7 baseline testing (MidYIS).
