Year 1

Year 1 teachers build on the successful practice of the Early Years team and continue to develop the love of learning in the girls and boys. Whilst much of the learning is formalised with more emphasis on written activities, provision is made for practical hands-on learning both inside and out of the classroom. Our recently redesigned playground provides an excellent setting for learning outside the classroom.
Much of the learning, in Year 1 is cross curricular and links closely to the termly topics of 'Food', 'London' and 'Living and Growing'. Out of school trips are topic related and in recent years have included visits to a 'pick your own' farm, The London Eye and The Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. Literacy skills and Mathematical understanding are developed through practical and formal activities which build confidence in the pupils. Formal cursive handwriting is introduced in Year 1.
Pupils learn and develop at different paces and lessons are prepared appropriately. Activities are differentiated so that all pupils are able to grow in confidence and enjoy success. From the Summer term of Year 1, pupils are set according to ability for maths lessons. Extra classes in Reasoning, Grammar and Comrehension skills are provided for girls and boys looking to sit entrance exams for future schools early in Year 2.
Collaborative learning is promoted and numerous opportunities are provided for discussion, and problem solving with partners or within small groups. Pupils are encouraged to become active learners and are asked regularly to reflect on their learning experiences.
