Year 5

Lower School

Year 5 is the last year in our Lower School.  The girls enjoy a varied and exciting curriculum which promotes responsibility and individual learning.  Exciting cross curricular projects allow pupils to develop and explore their own creativity through art, drama and writing.  As in the other year groups, the girls present a class assembly to the rest of the lower school each term.  In most cases much of the theme and content of these assemblies have been generated by the girls.  Popular special days include Tudor day where pupils come to school in period costumes and enjoy creative activities linked to the history topic.  Similarly while learning about the World War II evacuees, pupils engage in role play activities to help them to understand what it would have been like growing up during that time.

Pupils are taught by Upper School teachers for some of their subjects.  The girls benefit from specialist subject knowledge and are prepared for the transition to the Upper School in Year 6.

From Year 2, classes elect peers to represent them on the Student Council.  From Year 5 pupils are able to participate in both the Upper and Lower school councils.  Year 5 girls are paired with Year 1 pupils for fortnightly shared reading sessions.  These sessions offer the Year 5 pupils responsibility and the opportunity to demonstrate good reading models, whilst the younger pupils enjoy the individual attention of an older peer.
